About this research

Critical Pedagogies for AI is central to literacy learning in the 21st century.

GenAI is transforming multimodal text production, bringing new opportunities and risks for schools.

Extended reality technologies for multimodal literacy are also converging with AI, and include virtual, mixed and augmented reality technologies.

Multimodal literacy is central to the Australian Curriculum and international research, yet research and education largely prioritise visual texts. Visual skills alone are insufficient for the digital future.

This project aims to advance critical pedagogies to address gaps in uses of artificial intelligence and extended reality technologies – virtual, mixed, and augmented reality – for students’ multimodal literacies – key outcomes of the Australian curriculum.

This unique project will generate distinctive critical pedagogic models to support next-generation digital reading and writing competencies.

We are collaborating with teachers from primary and secondary schools (state and private), and with technology industry partners across to Australian States to equip students to use AI-XR texts as active agents.
